Q: What is memory foam?

A: Memory foam is a visco-elastic foam polymer that sensitive to body temperature. The foam softens and contours round the body with an increase in temperature. The name memory foam comes from the slow recovery of the foam after being compressed. Moulding to the contours of the body and its slow response ensure a comfortable, supportive mattress offering less counter pressure reducing pressure on the body.

Q: Does Memory Foam make you feel warmer?

A: Some people do feel a little warmer sleeping on a foam mattress (including memory foam) even though they both incorporate open celled polymers; however, the increased comfort and support offer a much better sleep. To overcome this, look out for mattresses that have a Coolmax cover or similar. The best solution for reduce overheating in bed is the addition of a natural merino wool topper, which can be added to your mattress at any time. See our Merino wool toppers

Q: What is the difference between Memory foam and ‘ordinary’ foam?

A: Both memory foam and ‘normal’ foam contour to the shape of your body offering better support and comfort than traditional spring mattresses.  The only difference is memory foam retains its shape momentarily after being compressed which some people find reduces pressure on the body and feels more sumptuous.

Q: I love my electric blanket; can I still use it with Memory Foam?

A: Using an electric blanket should not harm your memory foam mattress. Due the temperature sensitive nature of memory foam an electric blanket will soften the foam more than just body heat and you may find your mattress or topper will not feel as supportive when you first get in bed. We would not recommend having an electric blanket turned on whilst in bed.

Q: Why is there a big difference in the price of Memory foam mattresses between manufacturers?

A: There are various reasons for such differences in the retail price.

• Big brand names spend a significant amount on advertising and marketing with leading brands charging a premium if they are a household name. All of these ‘extra’ costs are paid for by the customer.

• A number of British manufacturers are renowned for high quality memory foam. This quality and life expectancy of the memory foam will be reflected in the retail price.

• Memory foam mattresses are made using layers of foam. The depth of the memory foam can make a significant difference, along with the quality of the support foams. Beware if a company does not state exactly how deep the memory foam layer is. The overall depth will also affect the price.

• There are now a number of different mattress covers available with some using high tech fabrics like Coolmax and Outlast which influence the overall selling price.

• There will always be unscrupulous retailers who will not think twice about offering low quality products, at low prices or worse, high prices. As always when buying on the internet, choose a company that has a significant web presence, can be contacted easily by telephone, and one that supplies branded products with realistic prices. Q: My new Mattress/Topper has a slight smell, how can I get rid of it, or will it fade?

A: Foam does have a feint natural odour to it but this fades over time and both the foam and odours are non toxic. With some products adhesives are used during the manufacturing process. This along with sealing the product quickly means there is a more noticeable odour upon opening the sealed packaging. This will disappear without any problem.

Q: The foam inside my mattress is changing colour, is this right?
A: Foam reacts to sunlight even through a mattress cover. The light that shines through the windows at the manufacturing plant can create what looks like ‘faded’ areas on ‘new’ foam. This does not harm or impair the performance of the product.

Q: Our bed which is a non standard size. Can you make a mattress to fit it?
